IBEDC Disconnects Ibadan Train Station Over Accumulated Electricity Debt

The Obafemi Awolowo Train Station in Ibadan has been plunged into darkness following a disconnection from the national power grid by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) due to unpaid electricity bills.

The disconnection, which has lasted for weeks, was carried out by IBEDC in an effort to recover what it described as a “substantial but undisclosed” debt owed by the train station. The facility is powered by the Moniya Railway 33kV feeder, which, according to IBEDC, remains off the grid due to non-payment.

A statement attributed to the electricity company acknowledged the ongoing supply issues, citing factors such as load shedding, forced and planned outages, and disconnection over outstanding bills. It stated:

“Kindly note that the mentioned feeders have been restored, except the Moniya Railway 33kV feeder, which is still out on disconnection for non-payment.”

Confirming the disconnection, Mrs Angela Olanrewaju, Coordinating Head of Corporate Services at IBEDC, said:

“It is true that the station has been disconnected from the grid. I cannot disclose the amount, but they are owing the company.”

The disconnection has severely impacted operations at the station, which is one of the major terminals along the Lagos-Ibadan railway corridor.

As of press time, there was no official statement from the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) or federal authorities on when the debt will be settled or power restored to the facility.
