A High Court sitting in Lafia, Nasarawa State, has sentenced gospel singer Timileyin Ajayi to death by hanging for the murder of Salome Adaidu, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), whom he was reportedly in a relationship with.
Presiding over the case, Justice Simon Aboki found Ajayi guilty of culpable homicide punishable by death, as defined under Section 221 of the Penal Code applicable in northern Nigeria.
Ajayi had earlier confessed to the crime, admitting that he killed Adaidu in a fit of rage over alleged infidelity. During his confession in January, the singer expressed no remorse for his actions.
“I didn’t plan to kill her. She is always cheating, she hides most things from me. I discovered she was cheating when I saw her phone, so I got angry seeing her chat with other guys, and that’s why I killed her,” Ajayi stated.
The tragic case sparked widespread outrage earlier in the year, especially among youth corps members and rights advocates, many of whom had demanded swift justice for the slain corps member.
Further details from the court proceedings are expected to follow.
