A US congressman has nominated former President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his “extraordinary and historic role” in brokering a ceasefire between Israel and Iran following days of escalating military conflict in the Middle East.
Representative Buddy Carter (R-GA), who is also running for U.S. Senate in Georgia, submitted a formal nomination letter to the Nobel Peace Prize Committee on Tuesday. In it, he credited Trump with halting what could have spiraled into a full-scale regional war and for thwarting Iran’s alleged nuclear ambitions.
“President Trump’s influence was instrumental in forging a swift agreement that many believed to be impossible,” Carter wrote. “His leadership exemplifies the very ideals that the Nobel Peace Prize seeks to recognize: the pursuit of peace, the prevention of war, and the advancement of international harmony.”
The nomination comes just after Trump announced a ceasefire to the so-called “12-Day War” on Monday afternoon, marking the official end to a conflict that began with a preemptive Israeli strike on Iran. Israel had accused Tehran of nearing nuclear weapons capability, prompting days of rocket exchanges, U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, and retaliatory missile launches — including one by Iran on a U.S. base in Qatar, which came with advance warning and resulted in no casualties.
While the ceasefire took effect overnight Tuesday, tension still simmers. Israel has already accused Iran of violating the agreement — a claim Tehran denies.
Carter, a staunch Trump ally, praised the former president’s role as pivotal in preventing further bloodshed, arguing that Trump’s “bold, decisive actions” were essential to neutralizing the crisis.
“In a region plagued by historical animosity and political volatility, such a breakthrough demands both courage and clarity,” Carter added. “President Trump demonstrated both, offering the world a rare glimpse of hope.”
This is not Trump’s first Nobel nomination. Earlier in 2025, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) nominated him following his return to the presidency, claiming his re-election had an “astonishingly effective impact” on global peace.
So far, over 330 individuals and organizations have been nominated for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, according to the official website.
Carter has made headlines before for his symbolic legislative gestures backing Trump, including a proposal to rename Greenland “Red, White, and Blueland” and a bill to allow Trump to sell a federal building named after former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
