INEC Receives 110 Applications for New Political Parties in Nigeria

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed the receipt of 110 applications from associations seeking registration as political parties in Nigeria.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this on Wednesday, June 25, during the second regular consultative meeting with media executives held at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

“As of Monday, June 23, 2025, the Commission has received letters of intent from 110 associations that wish to register as political parties,” Yakubu announced. “We are diligently processing the requests in line with procedures outlined in the Electoral Act as well as our regulations and guidelines.”

He further stated that while the commission has acknowledged nearly all the requests, six recent submissions are still being processed and will be acknowledged before the end of the week.

To ensure transparency, Yakubu said the full list of applying associations—including their proposed names, acronyms, office addresses, and the names of their protem chairmen and secretaries—will be published on INEC’s official website and social media platforms. Hard copies were also distributed to media representatives at the meeting.

“For emphasis,” he added, “I wish to inform Nigerians, particularly those interested in registering new political parties, that the handbook containing the Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties 2022 is already available on the Commission’s website.”

Among the associations seeking registration are: All Democratic Alliance (ADA), Advanced Democratic Alliance (ADA), Peoples Democratic Congress (PDC), Key of Freedom Party (KFP), Absolute Congress (ABC), African Union Congress (AUC)
