Japanese boxing star Jin Sasaki has reportedly lost six weeks of memory following a devastating knockout defeat in his world title challenge against American champion Brian Norman Jr. last week in Tokyo.
The 23-year-old welterweight, known for his explosive fighting style, was brutally stopped in the fifth round after a thunderous counter left hook from Norman landed flush on his chin, knocking him unconscious. Sasaki collapsed to the canvas and remained motionless for several minutes before being stretchered out of the ring by medical personnel.
Although medical scans have ruled out serious brain injuries or bleeding, the aftermath has been no less concerning. According to Issei Nakaya, president of Sasaki’s gym, the fighter has experienced partial memory loss, unable to recall not just the fight but several weeks leading up to it.
“I don’t even remember that this title match was decided,” Sasaki reportedly told Nakaya, highlighting the severity of his condition.
A statement released by the team confirmed that Sasaki was taken to hospital after the fight for a CT scan, which showed no immediate internal damage. However, doctors are continuing to monitor his condition, especially given the hard impact to the back of his head.
Sasaki had endured a tough fight even before the knockout, having been dropped twice in the opening round by Norman, who now remains undefeated at 28-0 and retains his WBO welterweight title.
In his post-fight remarks, Norman showed immense respect for Sasaki:
“He’s got heart. That boy is not a slouch at all. I give nothing but props to him,” he said.
As the American champion eyes a potential unification bout, concern continues to grow in Japan’s boxing circles over the long-term health of one of its brightest young stars.
Sasaki’s camp has confirmed he will undergo further medical evaluations, and for now, his future in the sport remains uncertain.
