Tragedy unfolded early Tuesday morning along the Soka axis of the Ibadan-Lagos Expressway, where a catastrophic multi-vehicle crash claimed four lives and left several others injured.
The accident, which involved four trailers, four commercial Micra cars, and a Toyota Camry, was triggered when a trailer reportedly attempted to reverse out of an abandoned filling station near Soka. An oncoming trailer rammed into it, setting off a deadly chain-reaction that saw three more trailers plough into vehicles ahead, crushing several of them.
One of the commercial Micra vehicles was completely flattened in the impact, killing all four occupants, including the driver. Among the deceased was a woman who had boarded the vehicle with her husband just moments earlier from the Sanyo area. While she died instantly, her husband, seated in the front, survived with minor injuries.
Personnel from the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) swiftly responded to the scene, evacuating the dead and transporting the injured to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.
This latest tragedy marks the sixth fatal accident recorded along that stretch of the expressway this year, fueling growing concerns over poor traffic regulation, the activities of articulated vehicles, and the general lack of enforcement on one of the region’s busiest routes.
