In a bizarre case of long-running deception, a 35-year-old man in the United States, Tirone Alexander, has been found guilty of impersonating a flight attendant over 120 times to travel across the country without paying for tickets.
According to reports from Oddity Central, Alexander exploited an internal airline policy that allows flight attendants and pilots from other carriers to fly for free on standby. Between 2018 and 2024, he successfully bypassed airport security and booking protocols to access this benefit fraudulently.
Federal prosecutors revealed that Alexander, who worked briefly as a legitimate flight attendant between 2013 and 2015, used his background to manipulate online check-in systems. He selected the “flight attendant” option on airline websites and filled out forms with fabricated employment details, including fake badge numbers and hiring dates.
Despite the sensitive nature of the policy, airlines reportedly failed to verify the submitted information, allowing Alexander to travel undetected for years.
“The evidence at trial also showed that Alexander posed as a flight attendant on three other airline carriers,” prosecutors said.
Records presented in court showed that Alexander flew to cities including Atlanta, Dallas, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles, using seven fake airline affiliations and rotating through around 30 combinations of identification numbers and start dates.
The case raises serious concerns about the loopholes in airline security and verification processes, especially in an era of heightened travel safety standards.
Alexander was convicted of: Four counts of wire fraud, each carrying a maximum 20-year sentence, and One count of fraudulently accessing a restricted area, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
His sentencing is scheduled for August 25, 2025.
