The Board of Public Relations Officers (PROs) of The Polytechnic Ibadan, under the leadership of Comrade Akinade Ridwan Bunyamin, has launched a timely and thought-provoking programme aimed at addressing the overwhelming influence of information in the digital age.
With the theme, “Information Overload: Strategies for Effective Decision-Making”, and a focus topic, “The Impact of Information Literacy in Navigating the Digital Landscape”, the forum seeks to equip students with the tools and mindset required to thrive in an era where digital content is both abundant and complex.
The initiative, proposed by the board chairman and his vice, Comrade Adebiyi Habeeb Olamilekan, is grounded in the understanding that students today are exposed to an unprecedented volume of information, especially through social media and online platforms.
To set the tone for this conversation, Chief Soladoye Adewole, the Public Relations Officer of The Polytechnic Ibadan Management, will serve as the keynote speaker.
Chief Adewole is expected to speak on the evolving responsibilities of student communicators, the ethical management of institutional information, and how public relations practices must adapt in a digitally charged world.
The guest speaker, Mr. Yusuf Wahab, a seasoned lecturer from the Department of Public Administration, Faculty of Business and Communication Studies (FBCS), will offer academic depth to the topic.
One of the major highlights of the event will be the panel discussion featuring top student PROs and digital practitioners from across notable institutions. Among the invited panelists are Comrade Adekanmbi E., the Student Union Government (SUG) PRO of the University of Ibadan (UI); Comrade Adeniji Gbemi T., the SUG PRO of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU); and Comrade Fakorede Tobi Emmanuel, a digital marketer and the FESSU President representing Aare Ekiti. These panelists will share their real-world experiences, strategies for responsible information dissemination, and how they balance digital engagement with truth, ethics, and purpose.
Speaking with Briefing Brew, Comrade Akinade Ridwan Bunyamin explained that the programme was designed in response to the growing challenge of “misinformation, data fatigue, and poor digital decision-making” among students.
“It’s not enough to be on social media or have access to information. As students and leaders, we must learn how to filter, verify, and utilise what we consume. This programme is a wake-up call to take control of our digital environment,” he said.
Vice-Chairman of the Board, Comrade Adebiyi Habeeb, added that the Board of PROs would continue to champion causes that shape responsible student engagement, especially in areas of communication, ethics, and leadership.
