Former Manchester United and England football star, David Beckham, has officially been awarded a knighthood in King Charles III’s 2025 Birthday Honours List, marking a significant milestone in his celebrated career both on and off the pitch.
Beckham received the prestigious accolade in recognition of his services to sport and charity, finally ending his long wait for Britain’s highest honorary title. Already honoured with an OBE in 2003, the ex-footballer now joins the ranks of British knights after years of speculation and delays.
“To have played for and captained my country was the greatest privilege of my career and literally a boyhood dream come true,” Beckham said in an emotional statement. “Off the pitch, I’ve been fortunate to represent Britain around the world and work with incredible organisations supporting communities in need and inspiring the next generation.”
He added: “It will take a little while for the news to sink in but I’m immensely proud, and it’s such an emotional moment for me to share with my family.”
Beckham, who earned 115 caps for England — 59 of those as captain — remains the only male English player to have scored at three different World Cups, appearing in every major tournament for the Three Lions between 1998 and 2006.
At club level, Beckham was pivotal in Manchester United’s dominance in the late 1990s, helping the team secure six Premier League titles, including the historic treble in 1999. His career also spanned Real Madrid’s Galactico era, a transformative stint in Major League Soccer with LA Galaxy, and later spells with AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain, before his retirement in 2013.
Post-retirement, Beckham transitioned into a major ambassadorial role. He has served as a UNICEF ambassador since 2005 and more recently became a key figure for The King’s Foundation in 2024. He also played a part in helping London secure the hosting rights to the 2012 Olympic Games.
Manchester United congratulated the football legend via social media:
“Massive congratulations from everyone at United on this special achievement, Becks — you truly deserve this.”
Beckham’s path to knighthood wasn’t without setbacks. Although he was reportedly nominated in 2011, his recognition was believed to have been delayed due to concerns raised by HM Revenue and Customs over a supposed tax avoidance scheme. The situation was further complicated in 2017 when leaked emails appeared to show Beckham’s frustration with the honours system — though his team said the messages were hacked, altered, and taken out of context.
The 2025 Birthday Honours List also recognised several other sports personalities. Darts sensations Luke Littler and Luke Humphries, along with former Lioness Rachel Daly, were awarded MBEs. Olympic triathlon gold medallist Alistair Brownlee received an OBE, while British tennis legend Virginia Wade was honoured with a CBE.
