UI College of Medicine Gets New Hostel Block from US-Based Alumnus

The College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, has received a major boost in student accommodation with the unveiling of a new hostel block, thanks to a generous donation from a distinguished alumnus, Dr. Philip O. Ozuah.

Named the Philip O. Ozuah Building (Block C), the facility is the first of six hostel blocks being developed through the support of the Ibadan College of Medicine Alumni Association Worldwide (ICOMAA-WW), Class of 1985. Dr. Ozuah, a renowned physician and the President/CEO of Montefiore Medicine, New York, funded the building to give back to his alma mater.

At the commissioning ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Kayode O. Adebowale, praised Dr. Ozuah’s contribution as an outstanding act of generosity rooted in a deep sense of commitment to medical education in Nigeria. He urged students who would occupy the new hostel to live responsibly and honour the sacrifice behind the project.

Dr. Ozuah expressed gratitude to his classmates, mentors, and family members who have supported him throughout his journey, and dedicated the gesture to the Class of ’85 for their enduring legacy.

Top dignitaries who graced the event included the Deputy Governors of Oyo and Enugu States, Barr. Bayo Lawal and Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai, both of whom commended Dr. Ozuah’s public-spirited contribution and encouraged other alumni to support their former institutions.

Other speakers like Hon. (Dr.) Abike Dabiri-Erewa of NIDCOM and representatives from the Federal Ministries of Education and Health lauded the University of Ibadan’s legacy and Dr. Ozuah’s example, emphasizing the importance of diaspora engagement in national development.

The building was officially commissioned by Dr. Ozuah alongside the Vice-Chancellor, following prayers led by Professor Olayinka Omigbodun and Alhaji L. A. Kazeem.

Students, staff, alumni, and medical stakeholders from the College of Medicine and UCH witnessed the ceremony—one that marked a significant step forward in improving student welfare and medical training at Nigeria’s premier university.
