UI Students’ Union Issues Scam Alert, Warns Students Against Fraudsters

The Students’ Union of the University of Ibadan has raised an urgent alarm over a growing wave of scam activities targeting students within the university community. In an official statement released from the Kunle Adepeju Building, the Union disclosed that it has received several credible reports of fraudulent individuals impersonating student entrepreneurs, university staff, and accommodation agents in a bid to deceive unsuspecting students.

According to the Union, these fraudsters have been reaching out to students, claiming they can help them clear extra years, secure accommodation, or offer various services in exchange for payment. In reality, the services do not exist, and victims are left defrauded and frustrated. The Union stressed that neither the University of Ibadan nor the Students’ Union would ever request money from students for academic clearance, payment of fees, or accommodation-related issues. All official university processes, it reiterated, must be verified through the appropriate academic or administrative channels.

The President of the Students’ Union, Dele Covenant Odedele, alongside the General Secretary, Segun V. Olowu, revealed that some of the scammers have already been apprehended through efforts coordinated with the University Security Unit. However, they noted that vigilance is still needed, especially as some of these fraudsters operate anonymously online, exploiting students’ desperation during registration, clearance, and accommodation seasons.

Students have been advised to verify all offers and claims through their departments or faculty offices before taking any action. The Union also warned against making payments to individuals or accounts that have not been officially endorsed by the university. Sharing personal information such as matric numbers, course details, login credentials, or financial data with unverified individuals was strongly discouraged.

Furthermore, the Union cautioned students to be wary of pressure tactics often used by scammers to create a false sense of urgency. Any student who suspects fraudulent activity is encouraged to immediately report the case to the Students’ Union or the University Security Unit for swift intervention.

“This is a crucial period for many students, and we will not allow scammers to take advantage of our hope and hard work,” the Union stated. In reaffirming their commitment to the safety and well-being of the student body, the leadership urged all students to stay informed, cautious, and connected to official information sources.
