The conspicuous absence of the Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebu land, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, at the 2025 Ojude Oba festival in Ijebu Ode on Sunday sparked concern among attendees and observers, as thousands gathered for the annual cultural celebration without the presence of its symbolic figurehead.
Clearing the air on Monday, the festival’s coordinator, Dr. Fassy Yusuff, confirmed that the 91-year-old monarch was unable to attend the glamorous event because he is currently recuperating at home after being discharged from a hospital in Lagos last Thursday.
Dr. Yusuff, a former Commissioner for Information in Ogun State, stated in a text message that the Awujale had been hospitalised two weeks prior but is now recovering well. “Awujale was hospitalised in Lagos two weeks ago, but was discharged on Thursday. He is now recuperating at home. A normal situation. Nothing to worry about,” he assured.
The monarch, renowned for his consistent presence at the festival for decades, was represented at the 2025 edition by his wife, Olori Kemi Adetona. His absence was particularly striking as he traditionally sits in royal splendour to receive homage from Ijebu sons and daughters, tourists, and dignitaries at the event held at the Awujale Pavilion.
Despite the Awujale’s absence, the festival retained its grandeur, with notable appearances from celebrities including Nollywood stars Lateef Adedimeji and Femi Branch, who added colour to the celebration.
The Ojude Oba festival remains one of Nigeria’s most prominent cultural gatherings, celebrating Ijebu heritage, unity, and the enduring legacy of the royal institution.
