PDP Continues to Sink as Lagos Leaders Defect to APC

The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened on Monday as key leaders of the party in Lagos State officially dumped the opposition platform for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Among the defectors is Hakeem Amode, the former Publicity Secretary of the Lagos PDP, who announced the move just moments ago. Although full details are still emerging, the announcement has sent ripples through the Lagos political landscape, reinforcing the narrative of an ongoing collapse within the PDP.

This latest wave of defections adds to a troubling year for the PDP. In recent months, the party has witnessed the defection of governors, senators, and other top-ranking members to the APC across several states.

In April, Senator Mathew Urhoghide from Edo State renounced his PDP membership, citing internal wrangling. Earlier this year, former Governor of Ebonyi State, Senator Sam Egwu, also hinted at possible realignment ahead of 2027.

The crisis worsened when nearly 1,000 youth groups affiliated with the PDP pledged allegiance to President Bola Tinubu, praising Nyesom Wike as the “party’s greatest asset” and calling for a broader coalition with the APC.

While some PDP chieftains continue to deny any plans to cross over, the reality suggests the party is bleeding members steadily — and publicly. Efforts by the party leadership to reconcile with key figures, including Peter Obi and others who left in the build-up to the 2023 general elections, have yet to yield results.

With internal fractures deepening and defections intensifying, questions continue to swirl around the PDP’s viability ahead of the 2027 elections.

More details on the Lagos defection and its implications for the party are expected soon.
