Makinde Advocates Six-Year Single Term for Political Office Holders

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has called for a constitutional amendment to introduce a single five- or six-year term for elected political office holders in Nigeria, arguing that such a reform would improve governance and reduce the distractions of re-election politics.

Governor Makinde made the statement at his Ikolaba residence in Ibadan while receiving dignitaries who paid him Sallah homage shortly after the Eid Kabir prayers held at the Agodi Eid Prayer Ground.

Speaking during the visit, the governor noted that the current multi-term system often shifts the focus of leaders from service delivery to political survival. According to him, a single-term structure would foster accountability, efficiency, and long-term development planning.

“Let’s have a constitutional amendment to allow for a single five- or six-year term. This will reduce the tension and distractions that come with second-term ambitions and give leaders the space to focus solely on delivering good governance,” Makinde stated.

In his remarks, Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, encouraged Muslims across the country to live out the values of sacrifice, discipline, and compassion learned during Eid. He also urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and resilient in the face of ongoing national challenges.

Also speaking, Honourable Stanley Olajide, who represents Ibadan North West/Ibadan South West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, called on Nigerians to embrace selfless service and total submission to the will of Allah. He stressed that true leadership and national transformation would only emerge through personal sacrifice and obedience to divine principles.
