Tottenham Hotspur have parted ways with head coach Ange Postecoglou just over two weeks after he ended the club’s 17-year wait for silverware by winning the Europa League.
The Australian manager, who joined Spurs from Celtic exactly two years ago on June 6, 2023, was dismissed despite leading the North London club to a historic 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final—a result that also secured their return to the Champions League.
However, Tottenham’s European success was overshadowed by a disastrous domestic campaign. The club endured their worst-ever Premier League season, finishing 17th with a mere 38 points and 22 defeats, the lowest tally since the league’s inception.
Postecoglou, 59, leaves midway through his four-year contract, having failed to translate cup success into consistent league performance. His second season promise—famously declared last September when he said, “I always win things in my second season”—ultimately rang true in Europe but fell flat in the Premier League.
The decision to sack Postecoglou makes him the fifth permanent manager to depart the club since Mauricio Pochettino’s exit in 2019, continuing Spurs’ turbulent managerial merry-go-round.
With the club now facing another rebuild, questions loom over whether Tottenham made the right call—sacrificing continental glory for domestic stability.
Fans are left divided: Was lifting the Europa League enough to excuse a near-relegation league finish? Spurs faithful, it’s your call.
