Former England football captain David Beckham is reportedly set to receive a knighthood in King Charles III’s upcoming Birthday Honours list, marking a major milestone in recognition of his legendary sporting career and extensive charitable work.
Beckham, 50, who was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2003, is now expected to be elevated further in the UK honours system. According to BBC Sport, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder is in line for the prestigious title, with the official list of recipients to be unveiled next week.
The honour would acknowledge not only his stellar football career—spanning 115 international caps for England and club stints at LA Galaxy, AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, and Inter Miami—but also his longstanding contributions to British society and global philanthropy.
Though Beckham was previously nominated for a knighthood in 2011, the process appeared to stall following the 2017 leak of private emails in which he allegedly expressed frustration with the honours committee. A spokesperson at the time insisted the messages were “hacked”, “doctored”, and “taken out of context”.
Beyond football, Beckham played a key role in London’s successful bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games and has served as a UNICEF ambassador since 2005. In 2015, the global children’s charity launched ‘The David Beckham UNICEF Fund’ to deepen the partnership. More recently, in 2024, he became an ambassador for The King’s Foundation, supporting educational and environmental initiatives spearheaded by King Charles.
In the sports business world, Beckham is a co-owner of League Two’s Salford City and president and co-owner of Inter Miami CF in the United States. He also helped launch the Inter Miami CF Foundation, a nonprofit aimed at empowering underserved communities through football.
While Beckham’s team has declined to comment on the reports, and a government spokesperson maintained the standard line that “we do not comment on speculation on honours,” the anticipated knighthood would cement Beckham’s status as one of the most decorated and influential figures in British sport and public life.
