Study How Wike Joined Tinubu’s Cabinet—Ooni of Ife Tells OAU, UI, Others

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has urged students and scholars at Nigerian universities, including Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and the University of Ibadan (UI), to critically study the political trajectory of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, particularly how he secured a place in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet despite being a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaking at the 2025 Distinguished Personality Lecture held at OAU on Thursday, the monarch described Wike’s appointment under an APC-led administration as “a mystery” worthy of academic investigation.

“You belong to a different political party and yet you are part of this government. It is still a mystery—I don’t even know how it happened,” the Ooni remarked while addressing Wike, the keynote speaker at the event.

“For me, it’s something that universities should be studying. Hate him or like him, what will be, will be. He is a politician to be studied.”

The monarch praised Wike’s resilience and continued relevance in national politics for over two decades, noting that his political survival and ability to transcend party lines reflect a unique phenomenon in Nigeria’s democracy.

The event, themed “Nigeria of Our Dreams”, was held at the Oduduwa Hall in OAU and featured remarks from top academics and student leaders.
