The University of Ibadan (UI) has restated its longstanding commitment to advancing data science, artificial intelligence, and machine learning across Africa through its faculties and research centres.
Speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Peter O. Olapegba, delivered a keynote address at the opening ceremony of the 13th edition of the Data Science Africa (DSA) Summer School and Workshop, which UI is currently hosting. He emphasized that the university continues to play a pioneering role in data-driven research and innovation across health, education, and development.
“Our faculties and research centres continue to champion data science activities — from machine learning in health and education to GIS and AI applications that advance development,” Professor Olapegba stated.
The DVC, who also serves as Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), described UI’s hosting of the 2025 edition as both symbolic and strategic, reaffirming the institution’s identity as Nigeria’s first and best university. He highlighted the role of data science in unlocking Africa’s potential:
“Africa is rich in data, but unfortunately, much of it remains underutilized. The power of data science lies in transforming these untapped resources into actionable insights for the continent’s development.”
Professor Olapegba also traced UI’s early involvement in the DSA platform, revealing that as far back as 2018, the university had encouraged faculty and students to participate in the initiative. He said many UI affiliates have contributed to DSA’s growing pan-African network, which seeks to empower a new generation of African data scientists
“Platforms like DSA provide mentorship, community, and the kind of practical learning opportunities needed to tackle local and global challenges,” he said.
Also speaking at the event, Professor O.F.W. Onifade of the Faculty of Computing and Secretary of the LOC, explained that Data Science Africa (DSA) is a pan-African initiative dedicated to building local capacity in data science, AI, and machine learning through workshops, research collaboration, and community-building events.
Founded in 2015, DSA has hosted events in several African countries. The 2025 edition, being held at the University of Ibadan, has drawn over 350 participants from across the continent, including data scientists, academics, students, policymakers, and tech industry players.
The five-day event will feature technical training sessions, keynote speeches, panel discussions, and networking opportunities, further cementing UI’s role as a hub for technological advancement and capacity-building in Africa.
