In response to growing concerns among students over the short timeline for school fee payments, the University of Ibadan Students’ Union has announced a two-week extension of the official deadline, following what it described as “relentless engagement” with the University management.
Originally scheduled to close on Thursday, June 6, the new deadline for both fee payment and course registration has been extended to Friday, June 20, 2025, according to a statement jointly signed by the Students’ Union President, Covenant Odedele, and General Secretary, Segun V. Olowu.
The Union emphasized that the original eight-week payment window was “insufficient” given Nigeria’s current economic climate. President Covenant Odedele and other executive members stated that the Union had earlier secured the extension but delayed public disclosure to work closely with the University’s Bursary Unit in expediting refunds from the previous session.
“Our goal was to ensure that this extended window would be meaningful not just in principle, but in practical terms for students relying on those refunds,” the statement read. “We are glad to report that the refund process is now actively underway, and many affected students have begun to see progress.”
In addition to the deadline extension, the Union reported successful reversals of certain faculty-specific fees, specifically the studio fee previously charged to 300, 400, and 500-level students in the Faculty of Technology and the Department of Science and Technology Education under the Faculty of Education. The Union clarified that these charges were never part of an official increment and were instead discrepancies that have now been corrected.
Furthermore, the Union announced progress on disbursements from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), revealing that students who applied can expect funds to begin reflecting in their digital wallets starting June 4. The Union credited this milestone to continued dialogue with both University officials and NELFUND representatives.
The statement ended with a call to action:
“We urge all students to not only take advantage of the extended window to pay their fees, but also to complete their course registration. Our commitment remains unwavering: to ensure that no student is left behind due to financial constraints or administrative lapses.”
With the June 20 deadline now set, the Students’ Union says it will continue monitoring the situation to ensure full transparency and accountability, reiterating its dedication to student welfare.
