David Coote, a former Premier League referee once entrusted with high-stakes matches including the 2023 Carabao Cup final, has taken an unexpected career turn—now working as a delivery driver for courier firm Evri.
The 42-year-old’s dramatic fall from top-tier officiating began in December 2024, when the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) dismissed him following the emergence of a viral video in which he criticised Liverpool FC and manager Jürgen Klopp. That controversy was soon followed by a 16-month suspension from UEFA, barring him from all European football activities until June 2026.
The scandal deepened when another video allegedly showing Coote snorting a white powder surfaced online, with unconfirmed reports linking the footage to the 2024 European Championships. Though details remain murky, UEFA’s disciplinary action left Coote sidelined and largely removed from the sport.
Now residing in Newark, Nottinghamshire, Coote has since taken a job with Evri, saying the role has helped him “regain a sense of responsibility and purpose.” He was recently recognised by a couple via their Ring doorbell camera while delivering a parcel—an encounter that quickly gained media attention.
“I want to get on with my life,” Coote told The Sun. “This job is keeping me occupied. It’s not a new long-term career, but it’s helping me stay grounded and focused.”
Reflecting on the series of events that led to his fall from grace, Coote acknowledged his mistakes. “I take full responsibility for my actions, which fell way below what was expected of me,” he said. “I’m truly sorry for the negative attention I brought to the game.”
He also spoke about the emotional toll of the experience and the steps he’s taking to rebuild his life, including prioritising his mental health and participating in charitable efforts. Recently, Coote completed the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon in honour of his uncle, who is battling Motor Neurone Disease, raising both funds and awareness.
Despite the sharp turn in his professional life, Coote remains hopeful that his past experience and passion for football may find purpose again in the sport someday.
“My focus now is healing and contributing however I can,” he added. “Hopefully, that includes football again in some form.”
