The University of Ibadan Students’ Union (UI’SU) has announced a ₦50,000 reduction in the studio fee for students in the Faculty of Technology, following strong advocacy and the presentation of evidence by the Union’s leadership. This was disclosed in the Union’s May 2025 newsletter, officially released to newsmen by the Public Relations Officer, Ezekiel Adekanmbi.
The newsletter also revealed that Union executives met with university management on May 30 to discuss the looming school fee deadline, where the administration assured that the NELFUND loan would be disbursed before the June 6 payment cutoff.
Throughout May, the Union demonstrated its commitment to student welfare through a series of impactful activities. It began the month with a town hall meeting on May 1 involving student leaders across the university to address pressing student concerns. That same week, the UI’SU Archive Team was inaugurated under the Office of the Public Relations Officer.
On May 3, a tank washing exercise was organized by the House Secretary’s office in all female hostels to ensure access to clean and potable water. By May 6, the Union leadership had met with the university’s management to present issues raised during the earlier town hall.
Subsequently, the Union paid a courtesy visit to the new Deputy Registrar on May 7, and on May 9, executive members, alongside leaders from faculty and hall councils, met with the Chief Imam of the University Central Mosqueto strengthen campus community engagement.
The Union also hosted its annual Freshers’ Week from May 11 to 17, themed “Premier Excellence.” Activities kicked off with a Walk Against Examination Malpractice and a movie night. On May 12, the Freshers’ Personality Lecturefeatured renowned speakers like Ayo Elesho, Adewole Yinka Mascot, Prof. Akintayo Oluwole, and Kawthar Salaudeen.
May 13 saw two major events — the Freshers’ Inter-Hall Oratory Competition and the One Day UI’SU President Experience. On May 14, the Union celebrated reaching 15,000 followers on X (formerly Twitter) and hosted the Freshers’ Freebies Arena, where fresh students received gift packs from supporting brands.
The UI’SU Treasure Hunt and final of the Freshers’ Cup were held on May 15, with Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall and Queen Elizabeth II Hall emerging as winners in the male and female categories, respectively. On May 16, the Union collaborated with Campus Rave for a Freshers’ Gyration Party, while the week wrapped up on May 17 with the UI’SU Variety Show and Mr. and Miss UI Freshers’ Night.
On May 19, the Union organized a solemn candlelight procession to honour late student Ilemobayo Emmanuel (popularly known as Oxygen), who passed away on May 16.
Sports activities also gained traction as the UI’SU Seals Cup officially kicked off on May 21, with the opening match between IPE and MBBS ending in a 2–2 draw. On the same day, the leadership visited Food Street, a key sponsor of Freshers’ Week, to express appreciation and explore future partnerships.
In academic achievements, the Union celebrated Akinlawon Goodness, a Law student and President of Obafemi Awolowo Hall, who won the Amnesty International Intervarsity Debate held in Abuja on May 22.
On May 25, the Union issued a public release on the NELFUND loan process and school fee deadline. Two days later, Union leaders met again with management over a fee discrepancy that eventually led to the ₦50,000 relief for Faculty of Technology students.
On May 26, the Vice President’s office, in partnership with the Faculty of Science, hosted a mega tutorial for PHY 101 and 103 to support students ahead of tests.
A notable infrastructural achievement came on May 29, with the official commissioning of the Itel Energy Solar System at the UI’SU SRC Chambers, in the presence of the Vice Chancellor. That same day, the Union joined a stakeholders’ meeting with the Dean of Students and University Bursar to deliberate on improving the Work-Study Scheme for financially vulnerable students.
This rich catalogue of advocacy, welfare, academic support, and student celebration has once again underlined the Union’s central role in student affairs.
