In a step toward bolstering regional security and professional capacity in West Africa, the University of Ibadan (UI) has officially launched a Master of Science (M.Sc.) programme in Security Management.
The postgraduate initiative is being championed by the TETFund Centre of Excellence in Security Management within Nigeria’s premier institution, aiming to provide advanced training and research solutions to meet Africa’s growing security demands.
Dr. Benjamin Adeniran Aluko, the Acting Director of the Centre, confirmed that the pioneer cohort of students began lectures two weeks ago, marking the programme’s formal commencement. Speaking on the development, Aluko described the new M.Sc. as a strategic response to the increasing complexity of security and intelligence challenges across the continent.
“This programme is designed as a pan-African response to both traditional and emerging threats,” he said. “Our curriculum focuses on producing practical, policy-oriented, and research-based solutions that will serve not only Nigeria but the entire West African region.”
The newly introduced course combines an interdisciplinary approach, drawing from criminology, intelligence studies, counterterrorism, cybersecurity, conflict resolution, and crisis management. It aims to equip participants with the tools and leadership skills required to assume strategic roles in national security agencies, multinational corporations, policy think tanks, and government institutions.
Security analysts and education stakeholders have widely praised the initiative, calling it a timely and much-needed intervention. With Nigeria facing persistent challenges such as insurgency, banditry, cybercrime, and kidnapping, experts say the creation of knowledge-driven frameworks for understanding and combating these threats is essential.
The TETFund Centre of Excellence was established to enhance research and capacity-building efforts in security-related fields. According to the Centre, the introduction of the M.Sc. programme is part of its broader mission to institutionalise a proactive and analytical approach to national and regional security, moving away from reactive strategies.
Admission into the programme is open to professionals in the military, police, intelligence services, corporate security, and related fields. It also invites applicants from other African nations, with a vision to transform the University of Ibadan into a regional hub for security leadership and innovation.
As Africa confronts an era of increasingly multidimensional threats, the University of Ibadan’s new academic offering underscores the critical role of universities in shaping the continent’s security architecture, through education, research, and high-impact policy engagement.
With this bold initiative, Nigeria is poised to produce a new generation of security professionals capable of meeting 21st-century challenges with knowledge, skill, and strategic foresight.
