The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS, fspsp, has reaffirmed the university’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with alumni, describing them as vital partners in the institution’s continued growth and sustainability.
Professor Adebowale made this known while receiving The Right Reverend Dr. Stephen Tunde Victor Adegbite, a distinguished alumnus and current Bishop of the Ikeja Diocese of the Methodist Church Nigeria. Adegbite is also the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Lagos State Chapter, and Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission.
The bishop, accompanied by a delegation from the Department of Religious Studies, paid a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor ahead of delivering the Second Distinguished Alumni Lecture organized by the department.
The Vice-Chancellor praised Dr. Adegbite for his distinguished service and for being a worthy ambassador of the institution, commending him for honouring the university’s invitation.
“UI is not just about bricks and mortar. It is about ideas, values, and partnerships. Public lectures such as this serve as platforms for engaging with critical societal issues. Our alumni community is a vital asset, and we are committed to nurturing that relationship,” Professor Adebowale said.
He noted that the university has created the Office of Alumni Relations to digitally document alumni records and foster smoother communication and collaboration, stressing that federal universities like UI cannot depend solely on government funding.
“We want our alumni to own the institution, to look back, give back, and be inspired to contribute to the sustainability and advancement of UI,” he added.
Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Professor S. O. Oyetade, noted that Dr. Adegbite had previously supported the faculty by facilitating the installation of a solar power system, highlighting the vital role alumni play in supporting academic infrastructure and research.
The Head of the Department of Religious Studies, Professor Olumuyiwa Familusi, explained that the alumni lecture was part of the department’s efforts to reconnect with its former students and spotlight their contributions to society.
The lecture, titled “Religion and the Murky Waters of Nigerian Politics”, aimed to explore the complex relationship between faith and governance, and the role of religious leaders in promoting social change.
In his remarks, The Right Reverend Adegbite expressed joy at returning to his alma mater and lauded the university’s continued commitment to excellence.
“It is always a delight to be back home. I thank the university management for sustaining the legacy of quality education. I pray for continued growth and greatness for UI,” he said.
The bishop’s entourage included senior officials from CAN Lagos Chapter, staff of the Department of Religious Studies, and other prominent church leaders.
