Delta Emerges Champion of 22nd National Sports Festival in Ogun State

Team Delta has once again asserted its dominance in Nigerian sports by emerging overall champions of the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway Games 2024, which was hosted by Ogun State.

The festival, which officially kicked off on May 18, was declared open by President Bola Tinubu, bringing together athletes from across the federation to compete in one of Nigeria’s most prestigious multi-sport events.

Delta State clinched the top position with an impressive medal haul of 109 gold, 75 silver, and 87 bronze, ahead of Bayelsa, which came second, and Ogun, the host state, which finished third.

The Executive Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Onoriode Oborevwori, attributed the historic win to the leadership and vision of Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, particularly under his administration’s youth-focused MORE Agenda.

“This victory is for His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, whose unwavering commitment to youth empowerment and sports excellence through the MORE Agenda has brought us this far,” said Oborevwori.

Although a few medal events were yet to be concluded as of press time, Oborevwori expressed confidence that Delta’s commanding lead was unassailable.

“Even though some medal events are still to be concluded, our commanding lead confirms that Delta is once again number one,” he added.

He praised the athletes, coaches, technical crew, and administrators for their dedication, discipline, and professionalism, stating that their efforts are proof of the power of strategic investment in sports development.

“This is not just about medals; it’s about building lives and inspiring hope. The MORE Agenda has opened doors for our youths to thrive through sports, and this win is proof of what is possible when leadership meets action.”

Oborevwori concluded by expressing optimism about Delta’s continued dominance in sports, pledging the state’s commitment to nurturing future champions.

“As we look forward to receiving the championship trophy during the closing ceremony, we do so with gratitude, pride, and the determination to keep building champions,” he said.

The next edition of the National Sports Festival will be hosted by Enugu State in 2025, as announced by the festival organizers.
