Former Super Eagles Coach and ex-Nigerian international, Sunday Oliseh, has been appointed to the International Football Association Board (IFAB), the global body responsible for defining and preserving the Laws of the Game in football.
Oliseh made the announcement via his official social media handle, calling it a “proud moment” and sharing his excitement at joining one of the most influential institutions in global football governance.
The appointment marks a significant milestone for Nigerian football, as Oliseh becomes one of the few Africans to sit on the historic board. IFAB, founded in 1886, works alongside FIFA and national associations to determine the rules that govern football worldwide.
Reacting to the news, fans and sports enthusiasts across Nigeria and the diaspora celebrated the development as a win for African representation in global football decision-making. Many praised Oliseh’s footballing pedigree, tactical brilliance, and outspoken stance on integrity in the game.
Oliseh, a former coach of the Nigerian national team and a veteran of the 1994 World Cup-winning squad, has had a long-standing career in football both on and off the pitch, with stints in top European leagues and contributions as a technical expert.
His new role at IFAB places him in a strategic position to contribute to shaping the future of football laws, ensuring fairness, safety, and innovation in the sport.
With this appointment, Oliseh joins a prestigious panel of representatives from FIFA and the football associations of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
