Real Madrid have confirmed the appointment of club legend Xabi Alonso as their new head coach, marking a sensational return to the Santiago Bernabéu. The Spanish tactician, who will officially take over from June 1, 2025, has signed a three-year deal that runs through June 2028.
Alonso, 43, departs Bayer Leverkusen after an impressive stint that saw him guide the German side to a second-place Bundesliga finish and a historic unbeaten league campaign in 2023/2024, capped with a German Cup triumph. His swift rise to managerial acclaim made him a hot target across Europe, but it was Madrid—where he spent five trophy-laden years as a player—that ultimately won his signature.
“With Carlo Ancelotti departing to manage Brazil, Real Madrid have found the perfect successor in one of their own,” the club said in a statement. “Alonso is one of the greatest legends of our institution, and now he returns to lead the next generation.”
Ancelotti, one of the most decorated managers in Madrid’s history, bowed out after a mixed season that included 15 titles during his tenure but ended with disappointments in La Liga and the Champions League. His successor now faces the monumental task of restoring Madrid’s dominance, particularly in Europe—a competition Alonso knows intimately.
Alonso’s first major test will come quickly. He is set to lead Madrid at the newly revamped FIFA Club World Cup in the United States this June, where they will open against Al-Hilal in Miami. With Madrid also aggressively strengthening their squad—including the acquisition of French superstar Kylian Mbappé and expected arrival of England’s Trent Alexander-Arnold—expectations are high.
Champions League success will no doubt be a priority for Alonso, who was part of the squad that lifted “La Decima” in 2014 under Ancelotti. Known for his tactical intelligence and calm leadership, Alonso is expected to bring structure and balance to a Madrid side that lost 14 matches this season and struggled with consistency despite individual brilliance.
The former midfield maestro, who also enjoyed successful spells under José Mourinho and Pep Guardiola, brings a philosophy shaped by Europe’s best. His return marks a new era for Real Madrid, one that fans hope will see the club reclaim its place atop Spanish and European football.
With Club World Cup silverware in sight and the Champions League looming large, the countdown to Alonso’s Bernabéu redemption story has officially begun.
