“The African Giant Is Dead”—Burna Boy Declares, Says Nigerians Killed His Persona

Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Burna Boy has stirred controversy again, this time declaring the symbolic death of his iconic alter ego, The African Giant.

In a post shared via the Instagram page for his forthcoming album No Signs of Weakness, the self-acclaimed global music export claimed that The African Giant persona—rooted in Pan-Africanism and black excellence—has been killed off. According to Burna Boy, the executioners were none other than “his people.”

“The African Giant is dead,” he wrote bluntly, “and he was killed by his own.”

The African Giant identity, which defined his critically acclaimed 2019 album and the Grammy-winning Twice As Tall, represented Burna Boy’s bold assertion of African pride and musical dominance. But over the years, it has been strained by the artist’s ongoing tensions with the Nigerian music community and his homegrown audience, many of whom he has often accused of underappreciation and betrayal.

Now, Burna says what remains is the “Big 7” persona—introduced in his 2023 album I Told Them—which he describes as being at odds with his softer, “lover boy” side. This creative conflict, he hints, forms a major theme in his upcoming eighth studio project.

Burna Boy’s declaration is the latest in a string of combative remarks he has made about his relationship with Nigeria and its music industry. He has previously accused local media of blacklisting him and claimed that Nigerian fans do little to support artists on a global scale.

Earlier this year, the Last Last hitmaker controversially stated that Nigerian social media fans cannot fill up a stadium anywhere in the world. In another post, he downplayed the significance of topping Nigerian music charts, arguing that local streaming revenue is too low to be celebrated.

Critics argue that Burna Boy has made a pattern of triggering controversy as a promotional tactic ahead of major releases. His latest comments come just hours before the drop of a new single featuring American rapper Travis Scott.

As anticipation builds for No Signs of Weakness, the question remains—has Burna truly buried the African Giant, or is this yet another dramatic rebrand from an artist who thrives on provocation?

One thing is clear: Burna Boy continues to polarize his audience while commanding global attention, controversy in tow.
