Amid growing criticism from the public, the Presidency has defended the recent approval of a N10 billion solar energy project for the Presidential Villa, arguing that the initiative is in line with global best practices and long-term sustainability goals.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, addressed the controversy via his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, following media reports questioning the necessity of the project amidst Nigeria’s current economic challenges.
Responding to concerns about the cost and timing of the initiative, Onanuga pointed to the White House in Washington D.C., which also utilizes solar energy as part of its power infrastructure. “The White House in Washington D.C. uses solar power,” he posted, reinforcing that renewable energy adoption in key government institutions is a globally accepted standard.
To further bolster the comparison, the presidential spokesperson shared a video detailing the U.S. government’s transition to solar at the White House, highlighting energy efficiency, cost savings, and environmental responsibility as key motivations behind the move.
Sources close to the project revealed that the proposed solar system will power key facilities within the Aso Villa complex, including the President’s residence and administrative offices, providing more stable and sustainable electricity supply.
While the move has attracted praise from environmental advocates who view it as a step toward green governance, many Nigerians have expressed frustration over the project’s timing and cost, especially at a period marked by widespread economic hardship and inflation.
The Federal Executive Council had earlier approved the project as part of broader energy reforms within government institutions, but public reaction has reignited debates over spending priorities and the perceived disconnect between leadership and citizens’ day-to-day struggles.
