The Federal Government has released the sum of N50 billion to academic and non-academic staff unions of federal universities for the payment of earned allowances, fulfilling a key promise made by President Bola Tinubu.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, through a statement issued by Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press at the Federal Ministry of Education.
“This intervention is not just a financial transaction—it is a reaffirmation of our President’s belief in the capacity of Nigerian youth and the invaluable role that academic and non-academic staff play in nurturing them,” Alausa said.
According to the ministry, the fund release reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to repositioning Nigeria’s education system as a cornerstone of national development. The administration sees the investment as part of a broader strategy to transition the country from a resource-dependent economy to a knowledge-based one.
Dr. Alausa also expressed the president’s gratitude to the university unions for maintaining peace across campuses, noting that Nigeria is currently witnessing one of its longest uninterrupted academic sessions in recent history.
President Tinubu, in a message conveyed through the minister, reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to keeping Nigerian students in school and ending the cycle of strikes. “The youth are the heartbeat of our country… Keeping our children in school is not negotiable,” the president emphasized.
