A youth faction within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), operating under the banner of the Progressive Youth for Makinde’s Presidency 2027 (PYMP2027), has publicly declared its support for Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State to contest the 2027 presidential election—despite the governor’s current silence on the matter.
In a statement signed by its National Secretary and Head of Media, Christopher Odianarewo, the group clarified that while they have no formal affiliation with Makinde or his political team, their advocacy is driven by a shared conviction in his leadership capabilities and a deep concern for the nation’s current trajectory under the APC-led federal government.
“Our beloved country is in crisis. We have proactively identified leaders who can guide Nigeria towards recovery. Our research has led us to H.E. Engr. Oluseyi Makinde,” Odianarewo said.
The youth group highlighted soaring inflation, declining naira value, rising insecurity, housing shortages, and a failing educational system as pressing issues demanding urgent intervention. They argued that Nigeria needs a leader with a proven track record of reform and inclusive governance—qualities they believe Makinde has demonstrated in Oyo State through advancements in healthcare, security, agriculture, education, and economic development.
PYMP2027’s declaration comes amid speculation and denial about Makinde’s intentions for 2027. In a recent TV interview, it was implied that the Oyo governor had distanced himself from any presidential ambition. However, the youth group dismissed such narratives as distractions, reaffirming that their campaign is a grassroots call to national service.
“This is not just political maneuvering. It is a vital appeal for leadership that transcends party lines, ethnicity, and religion,” Odianarewo added.
They also distanced themselves from accusations of being “overzealous,” asserting their mission is to rebrand the PDP and champion leaders capable of uniting and rebuilding Nigeria.
While Governor Makinde has not officially commented on his 2027 political future, this growing grassroots movement suggests a deepening desire among some PDP blocs to project him beyond regional politics into the national space. Whether this momentum translates into an actual campaign remains to be seen—but the signals are getting louder.
