77-Year-Old Nigerian Man Shot Dead While Driving Uber in US

A 77-year-old Nigerian Uber driver, Olatunji W. Bolaji, was fatally shot while on duty in Philadelphia, United States, in a tragic incident that has left many in shock.

Bolaji, a resident of Norristown, Pennsylvania, had picked up a 22-year-old male passenger outside the Byblos Hookah Bar near Rittenhouse Square around 2 a.m. on Wednesday, April 16, when a black Jeep Grand Cherokee pulled up behind his SUV. Two assailants emerged from the vehicle, and one of them opened fire on both Bolaji and his passenger.

Despite sustaining a gunshot wound to the head, Bolaji managed to drive a short distance before crashing into a pole at 17th and Chestnut Streets. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger was critically injured with gunshot wounds to the arm, leg, and stomach and was rushed to Jefferson University Hospital.

The Philadelphia Police Department confirmed that the incident was captured by surveillance cameras and that the suspects’ vehicle bore Massachusetts license plates. Investigators believe the shooting may have stemmed from a physical altercation involving the passenger prior to the attack, but the motive remains under investigation.

Uber, in a statement, expressed deep sorrow:
“Our hearts break for the driver’s family and loved ones in the wake of this devastating loss. We’re working closely with law enforcement to support their investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice.”

Bolaji was described by neighbors and friends as a kind, hardworking man, a devoted partner, and a proud father of a college graduate. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist his grieving family with funeral and memorial expenses.

As investigations continue, the Nigerian-American community and well-wishers call for swift justice in memory of a man who spent his twilight years helping others.
