The University of Ibadan has raised an alarm over the increasing involvement of its female students in egg donation for financial gain, cautioning that the practice should not be seen as a side hustle.
In an internal memo dated April 15, 2025, and obtained by PUNCH Online on Friday, the University Health Service, through its Director, Dr. Aderonke Ajayi, expressed concern about a growing trend in which students are being recruited by individuals, agents, or agencies as egg donors for In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF).
Dr. Ajayi acknowledged that while egg donation has provided hope for families struggling with infertility, it comes with significant health risks and should not be used as a long-term source of income.
“Egg donation involves the use of hormonal medications to stimulate the ovaries. This process carries several short-term risks including abdominal pain, breast tenderness, bloating, mood swings, and a potentially life-threatening condition known as Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS),” she said.
The memo also listed potential complications such as infections, bleeding, ovarian torsion, injuries to internal organs like the bladder and bowel, and psychological distress.
Ajayi warned that some women have reported long-term fertility issues after multiple donations, although research into these risks is still ongoing. She advised that egg donation should not exceed three times in a year and urged students to only engage with certified medical facilities that prioritize donor safety.
“It is important that our students understand the health implications and long-term consequences of egg donation. We advise everyone to act with caution and prioritise their health over financial incentives,” the university stated.
UI also called on the university community to help spread awareness and shield young women from exploitation or misinformation regarding the risks associated with egg donation.
