he Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has revealed why he did not back the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the 2023 general elections, describing him as a “social media candidate” with no realistic path to victory.
Wike, a former Governor of Rivers State, made the comments during a press briefing on Friday in Abuja, where he explained that his decision was based on political calculations, not sentiments.
“No, he has no chance to win election,” Wike said. “I don’t go to where you see people like this kind of social media candidates. I don’t do social media candidate.”
He stated that as a seasoned politician, he prefers to align with candidates who demonstrate clear electoral viability. “I said I see that as a politician, and I analyse the candidate who is likely to win,” Wike added.
According to him, electoral victories in Nigeria are rarely decided by popularity alone. “In politics, it’s not always about who is the best candidate. So many factors come into play,” he said.
Wike also referenced the economic turmoil caused by the controversial naira redesign and fuel scarcity in the lead-up to the election, stating that the policies nearly derailed the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign.
“It was very turbulent for Tinubu to get to that election,” he said. “You could see people didn’t want to speak the truth before that election.”
He commended President Bola Tinubu for navigating the challenges, praising his political dexterity and divine favour. “No party in government would introduce those kinds of policies while running for re-election. But everything was done, and he survived it,” Wike said. “That’s how you know some people—first of all—God is on their side. Two, they know the game. You must give it to them.”
