If you’re still clinging to your faithful old smartphone, it may soon be time to upgrade—or risk losing access to WhatsApp.
Beginning May 5, 2025, the popular messaging platform will officially stop working on several older devices, both Android and iOS, as part of routine updates by Meta to enhance security and performance on newer operating systems.
According to Meta, “These changes are part of our ongoing efforts to keep WhatsApp secure and compatible with the latest technologies.”
While most users won’t be impacted, those using smartphones released over a decade ago could be affected. WhatsApp will no longer function on devices running iOS versions earlier than 15.1 or Android versions older than 5.0 (Lollipop).
iPhones Losing WhatsApp Support:
• iPhone 5s
• iPhone 6
• iPhone 6 Plus
These models, capped at iOS 12.5.7, can no longer meet WhatsApp’s system requirements.
Android Phones Affected:
WhatsApp already dropped support for Android KitKat (version 4.4) on January 1, 2025, and now more devices are joining the obsolete list:
Samsung:
• Galaxy S3
• Galaxy Note 2
• Galaxy Ace 3
• Galaxy S4 Mini
Motorola:
• Moto G (1st Gen)
• Razr HD
• Moto E 2014
HTC:
• One X
• One X+
• Desire 500
• Desire 601
LG:
• Optimus G
• Nexus 4
• G2 Mini
• L90
Sony:
• Xperia Z
• Xperia SP
• Xperia T
• Xperia V
Both standard WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business will be affected, as they share the same minimum software requirements.
How to Check if You’re Safe
If your phone runs iOS 15 or later, or Android 5.0 and above, there’s no need to worry—you’ll continue to receive app updates and new features.
What To Do If Your Device Is on the List:
1. Back Up Your Chats:
Use iCloud (iPhone) or Google Drive (Android) to save your messages before switching phones.
2. Check for Software Updates:
Go to your phone’s settings to see if a software update is available. If your device can upgrade to a supported version, do so immediately.
3. Consider Upgrading:
If your device no longer supports the latest OS, it may be time to consider a newer model. Many affordable smartphones now offer full WhatsApp support and improved performance.
With just weeks to go before the cutoff date, now’s the time to check your phone and make sure you stay connected.
