2027: I Have What It Takes to Be President — Makinde Declares

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has declared his ambition to run for the presidency in the 2027 election, stating he possesses the necessary capabilities to lead the nation. However, he has rejected the inter-party coalition spearheaded by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, insisting that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) must first solidify its internal structure before considering alliances.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today program, Governor Makinde emphasized the importance of party unity, stating, “We must fix our party, we must have a platform for you to even aspire to be anything.” He also acknowledged the potential for a political shift in the 2027 election, stating, “The 2027 elections would be between Nigerians and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC); and not a contest between the PDP and the APC.”

Makinde’s rejection of the Atiku coalition aligns with the stance of other PDP governors who also oppose the alliance. They believe that the party should focus on internal strengthening and fielding a southern candidate for the presidency. This stance has been supported by PDP Board of Trustees member Bode George, who believes that the party can win the next election with a southern candidate.

While expressing his presidential aspirations, Makinde stressed that he would not be swayed by public opinion or political pressure. “Nobody will set an agenda for me. I will set an agenda for myself,” he stated. He emphasized his commitment to fulfilling his mandate as governor of Oyo State, stating, “I am focusing on what Oyo State people have given to me; the task ahead of us.” He added, “If I want to contest, I will come out at the appropriate time.”

Makinde’s declaration of presidential ambition adds another layer of complexity to the already fluid political landscape ahead of the 2027 election. The PDP’s internal divisions, coupled with the emergence of new coalitions and alliances, suggest a highly competitive and unpredictable race for the presidency.
