Yes, this is the University of Ibadan , the first and the best. Getting into UI isn’t just a stroke of luck; it’s proof that you’ve got something special. You’ve earned your seat at the table where many of Nigeria’s finest minds have once sat.
But here’s the truth: being in UI is one thing , thriving in UI is another. This place will test your limits, shake your confidence at times, and challenge everything you think you know. But if you navigate it right, you won’t just graduate with a degree; you’ll come out with sense, sauce, and substance, fully ready for the big world beyond those school gates.
1. Develop a Reading Lifestyle That Works for YOU
Let’s be real , UI will stress you academically. But here’s the catch: not everyone reads the same way. Don’t get carried away by the “TDB” (Till Day Break) crowd if that style doesn’t work for you. Just because someone is hyped up on coffee and vibing in Kenneth Dike Library all night doesn’t mean that’s your path too. Discover your own rhythm, morning reader? Afternoon grinder? Quiet weekends? Lock in on what brings results, not what looks cool.
Reading is not optional here, it’s your survival tool. UI is not the kind of school where you “wing it.” If you’re not serious, the school will show you pepper.
2. Have Role Models and Senior Friends in Your Department
Don’t walk through UI alone. Every department has OGs who know the ropes , seniors who’ve been where you are, who know the lecturers, the course codes, and even the tricks to surviving those crazy 3-unit courses. Befriend them. Learn from them. Listen when they advise you about that lecturer who doesn’t tolerate late submissions or that course that’s notorious for low grades. Information is gold in UI.
3. Be Respectful – It Opens Doors
Respect is not slavery. It’s a key. Greet your lecturers. Greet your non-academic staff. Greet that grumpy porter. UI is filled with intellectuals who value manners, and sometimes, a simple “Good morning sir/ma” can be the beginning of unexpected favour. Don’t carry shoulder; UI has a way of humbling everyone.
4. Build the Right Circle – Join Groups, Be Active
UI is not just books, it’s networking. Join student associations, professional bodies, press boards, religious groups, volunteer teams, anything that adds value. That’s where you find your tribe, your opportunities, your soft skills. Be visible. Be active. Let people know you, not for clout, but for capacity. 5. Party, But Don’t Party Away Your Destiny
We get it, vibes will come. Raves, house parties, dinners, hall weeks, freshers’ night. But if you’re not intentional, parties will party you out of purpose. Learn to say no. Have fun with sense. UI is not anti-enjoyment, but it’s also not the place to lose direction.

Information flies fast in UI, and sometimes it doesn’t get to everyone. You need class WhatsApp groups, friends who’ll tell you when there’s a lecture change, or share that material you missed. You don’t have to be best friends with everyone; just be open, approachable, and reliable. Your class is your first support system.
7. Attend Lectures. Read Your Mails. Show Up.
Some lecturers mark attendance. Others don’t, but they remember faces. Showing up, even when you don’t feel like it, builds consistency. Check your student email. UI doesn’t babysit — they won’t call your phone. Miss that email? You might miss a test.
8. Protect Your Mental Health
The pressure can be intense, deadlines, low grades, identity crisis, imposter syndrome. Talk to someone. UI has counsellors. Your faith group might help. Your friends. Don’t die in silence. A strong mind wins in UI.
9.Tread Carefully — UI No Dey Shout
One thing you need to understand early is that UI has silent rules… and the consequences are loud. If you ever hear that the school is against something, flee. Don’t try to test waters , because if you break the rules, you won’t even know when your name enters the SDC list. And if you don’t know what SDC means, don’t worry, your colleagues will translate. (Just pray your name never gets mentioned there.)
Don’t cheat. Seriously, don’t. In UI, it’s better to fail with dignity than to cheat and get caught, because the embarrassment and punishment that comes with malpractice can stain your entire academic journey. No result is worth your reputation. UI forgives a lot of things, but cheating isn’t one of them.
