Christian Chukwu, former captain and head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, has died at the age of 74.
The iconic football figure reportedly passed away in the early hours of Saturday, April 12, 2025. While the exact cause of death has not yet been disclosed, tributes have begun pouring in from across the football world.
His longtime friend and teammate, Dr. Olusegun Odegbami, confirmed the news in an emotional tribute.
“I just received the news that between 9:00 and 10:00 this morning, ‘Chairman’ Christian Chukwu, MFR, my bosom friend and teammate, one of the greatest football players in Nigeria’s history, has passed on,” Odegbami wrote.
“Babuje, Emmanuel Okala, MON, gave me the sad news a few minutes ago. May ‘Onyim’ find peace with Our Creator in Heaven and console his family.”
Chukwu, affectionately known as “Chairman”, was a towering figure in Nigerian football. He captained the Green Eagles to their historic first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in 1980 and went on to serve as head coach of the Super Eagles in the early 2000s.
In 2021, false rumors about his death circulated online, which he debunked during his 70th birthday celebration on January 4.
“I am terribly embarrassed with this news that I am dead. Several people have been calling me from across the world since the news broke. I am still investigating the source of the story,” he had said at the time.
Chukwu’s contribution to Nigerian and African football—both on the pitch and from the sidelines—cemented his place as one of the continent’s most respected sportsmen. His leadership, discipline, and commitment inspired generations of players and fans alike.
More updates will be shared as the story develops and funeral arrangements are announced.
