NBC Bans Eedris Abdulkareem’s Protest Song “Tell Your Papa” from Airwaves

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has officially banned the airing of Eedris Abdulkareem’s controversial protest song “Tell Your Papa” on Nigerian radio and television stations. The move follows concerns over the song’s “objectionable nature” and its failure to meet broadcasting standards under Section 3.1.8 of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, which governs offensive or inappropriate content.

In a memo dated April 9, 2025, the NBC’s Coordinating Director of Broadcast Monitoring, Susan Obi, instructed stations to refrain from playing the track, citing its violation of public decency and the need to maintain responsible broadcasting standards.

Released earlier this week, “Tell Your Papa” quickly gained traction on social media due to its direct criticism of Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu. In the track, Abdulkareem calls on Seyi to confront his father about Nigeria’s worsening socio-economic conditions, including the escalating insecurity and economic hardships affecting the nation’s citizens.
