A female commercial driver in Lagos State has called for justice after she was allegedly assaulted by a street thug, commonly referred to as an Agbero, during an attempted theft of her car battery.
In a viral video making rounds on social media Tuesday, the visibly distraught woman appeared with swollen facial injuries as she recounted the harrowing experience. The incident reportedly took place near the Oriental Hotel when the suspect, posing as a passenger, boarded her vehicle claiming he was heading to the Nigerian Law School.
According to the driver, she noticed through her rear-view mirror that the man was attempting to remove her battery. Upon confronting him, he allegedly attacked her, tearing her clothes and dragging her violently in public.
“He started beating me when I asked him where he was taking my battery,” she said tearfully in the video. “He tore my clothes and battered me. Please, anyone watching this video, help me. Call human rights. Is this how a woman trying to survive should be treated?”
The woman, whose name has not been disclosed, lamented the silence of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Lagos State authorities despite her regular payment of levies. She alleged that female drivers are routinely harassed and abused with little to no protection from those meant to safeguard their rights.
“This man must be brought to justice. Let him be an example,” she added. “Is being a female commercial driver in Lagos a crime?”
She also alleged that the attacker is part of a notorious ring of street urchins who prey on commercial drivers, stealing batteries and other vehicle parts.
As public outrage grows online, calls for swift action and accountability from transport unions and law enforcement agencies continue to mount. Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the incident.
