Polytechnic Ibadan Mourns Former Principal and Ex-Oyo Governor, Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo

The Polytechnic, Ibadan, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of its pioneering principal and former Governor of the Old Oyo State, Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, who died over the weekend.

The Acting Rector, Dr. Taiwo Abideen Lasisi, along with the management, staff, and students, has joined other distinguished Nigerians in mourning the loss of the academic and political figure. Dr. Olunloyo’s contributions to the institution and the nation have left an enduring legacy.

In a statement issued by the institution, signed by the Acting Registrar, Mr. Joseph Adewumi Ogunjimi, and made available to the media by the Public Relations Officer (PRO), Alhaji Soladoye Adewole, the Polytechnic described the death of Dr. Olunloyo as a “huge loss to the nation.” The statement further acknowledged that Dr. Olunloyo, “a world-acclaimed mathematician and engineer, made a positive impact within the short time as principal of the school.”

The statement reflected on his brief but impactful tenure as the first principal of the Polytechnic (later renamed Rector). During his time, Dr. Olunloyo initiated the construction of a key link road connecting the southern and northern parts of the campus. “As principal, he opened the link road between the south and north of the institution using the students and the staff of the engineering department,” it added.

“The Polytechnic, Ibadan, joins other Nigerians in praying for the repose of the soul of Dr. Omololu Olunloyo, an academic colossus and technocrat,” the statement concluded, recognizing his immense contributions to education and national development.

Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, born on April 14, 1935, in Ibadan, Oyo State, was a distinguished mathematician, engineer, and statesman who made significant contributions to both academia and public service. He began his education at Government College, Ibadan, before studying at the University of St Andrews in Scotland, where he earned a first-class degree in mathematics. He later completed his Ph.D. at the University of London, further establishing his academic prowess.

In 1983, Dr. Olunloyo was elected Governor of the Old Oyo State, which encompassed present-day Oyo and Osun States. Although his tenure was cut short by the military coup of that same year, his leadership was marked by intellectual and developmental initiatives aimed at improving the state.

Dr. Olunloyo’s appointment as the first principal of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, marked the beginning of a lasting legacy at the institution. His leadership led to significant infrastructure development, including the construction of the vital link road that connected the northern and southern parts of the campus, a project that involved the collaboration of the students and staff of the engineering department.

Dr. Olunloyo was a fellow of prestigious organizations such as the Nigerian Academy of Science and the Nigerian Society of Engineers. His intellectual contributions and public service have left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s education and governance.

He is survived by his children, grandchildren, and a legacy that continues to inspire generations in the fields of education, science, and governance.
