Protesters gathered on Monday at Ikeja Under Bridge, Lagos, as part of a nationwide demonstration organized by the Take-It-Back Movement in collaboration with several civil society organisations.
The protest was held to highlight growing discontent over several national issues. Key among these are the alleged misuse of the Cybercrime Act, the worsening economic hardship across the country, and what the organisers described as a “state of emergency” in Rivers State.
Demonstrators carried placards with strong messages such as, “Any law that forbids us from speaking against oppression in Nigeria is no longer a law but shackles of slavery” and “When law becomes a tool of oppression, unite to repeal it.”
In a statement released last Friday, Juwon Sanyaolu, the National Coordinator of the Take-It-Back Movement, said the protest was aimed at challenging what he called the “increasing authoritarianism” of the current administration. He also demanded urgent relief measures for millions of Nigerians grappling with rising inflation and worsening insecurity.
