Nigeria has officially expressed interest in hosting the 2030 edition of the Commonwealth Games, with the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) confirming it met the March 28, 2025, deadline for submission of its Expression of Interest.
The proposed host city is Abuja, the nation’s capital, which last hosted a major multi-sport event during the 2003 African Games. The NOC says the 2030 bid would serve as an opportunity to demonstrate Nigeria’s developmental strides, elevate its global reputation, and reignite its sporting culture.
According to a statement released by NOC spokesperson Tony Nezianya, Nigeria’s previous experience with international sporting events will serve as a strong foundation.
“That experience will provide a solid platform for Nigeria to host again, showcasing its ability to manage the logistics, hospitality, and infrastructure development required by such events,” the statement read.
However, the NOC emphasized that the formal bidding process can only proceed with full support from the Nigerian government.
Nigeria previously attempted to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games but lost the bid to Glasgow, Scotland.
The 2026 Games are set to return to Glasgow following the withdrawal of the Australian state of Victoria, which pulled out due to rising costs.
If successful, Nigeria would become the first African country to host the Commonwealth Games—a historic feat that would mark a significant milestone in the nation’s sporting history.
