Tragedy struck the Ori-Ohin community in Ifon, the headquarters of Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State, as lightning reportedly killed eight cows during a heavy downpour on Sunday evening.
The unexpected incident has sparked concern and panic among residents, many of whom were left alarmed by the strange natural occurrence.
Spokesperson of the Ondo State Police Command, SP Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed the incident to Channels Television via a telephone call. He described the incident as unfortunate, but clarified that it was a natural phenomenon.
“This is a natural occurrence, and we sympathize with the owners of the animals,” Ayanlade said. He further noted that police authorities have engaged with local leaders to ensure the situation is properly managed and does not escalate into controversy or unrest.
This is not the first time such an event is happening in the state. In 2019, a similar lightning strike in Ijare, Ifedore Local Government Area, killed 36 cows that were grazing on a hill.
Residents have since been urged to remain calm and not read spiritual or superstitious meanings into the incident.
