Shelve April 7 Nationwide Protest, Police Warn Organisers

The Nigeria Police Force has called on the organisers of a planned nationwide protest scheduled for Monday, April 7, to suspend the demonstration, warning that it coincides with the country’s newly declared National Police Day.

The protest, organised by the Take-It-Back (TIB) Movement, was slated to address various national issues. However, in a statement issued on Sunday, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, described the timing as “ill-conceived” and “mischievous,” arguing that it could be seen as an attempt to undermine the image of the police and the nation.

“In line with best global practices adopted by nations in celebrating the achievements of their police institutions, the Nigerian Government has taken the bull by the horn by declaring every April 7 as National Police Day,” the statement read.

“It is questionable and perceived to be a deliberate and unpatriotic act to stage a nationwide protest on the same day, potentially maligning the image of the Nigeria Police and the country at large.”

The police also noted that the event is expected to host dignitaries from within and outside Nigeria, including foreign police chiefs and diplomats, to celebrate the resilience and service of Nigerian officers.

While reaffirming citizens’ constitutional rights to peaceful protest, the Force appealed to the TIB Movement and all prospective participants to embrace dialogue instead.

“The Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, urges all organisers and intending participants to engage with the appropriate institutions of government to press home their demands through dialogue,” the statement added.

This year marks the first official celebration of National Police Day, following the government’s decision to designate April 7 for the annual event to honour the country’s law enforcement personnel.
