Former Oyo Governor, Victor Olunloyo, Dies Just Days Before 90th Birthday

Victor Omololu Olunloyo, former governor of Oyo State, has passed away at the age of 89, just days before his 90th birthday. The news of his death was confirmed in a statement released by Barrister Oladapo Ogunwusi, a former Editor of the Nigerian Tribune.

Dr. Olunloyo, who served as Oyo State’s governor for a brief period from October 1 to December 31, 1983, was a prominent figure in Nigerian politics. He was a member of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) and defeated the incumbent, Bola Ige of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), in the 1983 gubernatorial election.

Born on April 14, 1935, Olunloyo was not only a politician but also a respected mathematician, engineer, and technocrat. He held several notable positions, including being the first Rector of Ibadan Polytechnic and the first Rector of Kwara State Polytechnic. His contributions to the education sector and his long record of service to the nation were sources of pride to his family and colleagues.

In a statement, the Olunloyo family expressed deep sorrow over his passing, describing him as a “man of service” whose impact on the country was immeasurable. The family also requested privacy as they make arrangements for his burial.

Dr. Olunloyo was also known for his traditional titles, including the Balogun of Oyo and Otun Bobasewa of Ife. His death has sent shockwaves across the political and academic circles, as he was widely regarded as a visionary leader and an advocate for development.

The family has requested the understanding of the press and the public as they mourn the loss of a distinguished son of Nigeria.
